On this day - Arctic Redpoll
On this day in 2012 I saw my first and only Hornemann’s. I’ve seen several Coue’s over the years - but just the one of this subspecies. It was super tame and favoured a really exposed section of shingle by the yaught club.
We walked North Warren and Sizewell after, giving the crowds a swerve and restoring the gentlemanly birding balance.

I also remember it as the first time I was disgusted by a twitch. I’d been to several before - since my first in 2009 - but this one felt different. Crowding of the bird, less binoculars, more cameras generally just an unpleasant vibe. Whilst the people and vibe was a bit grim, the bird was still an absolute super star.
