Kings Forest, Lackford and Fornham

Clocked 27 miles in the saddle, first proper ride on my new bike. Specifically purchased for maximum Local Big Year damage...

The forest was quiet - but always beautiful on a sunny winters day. Highlights included a flyover Raven - still a great bird in West Suffolk and not easy to bump into - as well as a Brambling flock, with at least 30 birds.

Lackford was tolerable and it was good to see other birders. Sounds odd, but a bird watcher as opposed to photographer, coffee and caker or dog walker is a rare commodity on that 'nature reserve' nowadays. It was particularity good to catch up with old friend Maurice and add Great-black Backed Gull, Bullfinch and Sparrowhawk to the year list.

Snipe - Lackford Lakes - 09th January 2022

A solid 27 mile loop with a good mix of habitat, I'll definitely do it again it better conditions:

A leg-loosener after lunch made the most of the remaining light and provided belter views of the parakeets, Barnacle and Pink-footed Geese on the golf course. The pinkies at least one week into their stay.

Ring-necked Parakeet - Fornham All Saints - 09th January 2022

Nine days into 2022 and 84 species up; all seen on foot or bike from the front door. Pretty chuffed on that. Still plenty more to find - I've not seen any owl species yet, the local Peregrines or Woodlark and Crossbill in the forest. Look forward to more miles and more birds next weekend...
